JC Caylen was invited by Joey Graceffa to save the town of Everlock and was given the role of The Hippie. He was voted into the Circus Tent Challenge against Teala Dunn and chose Matthew Patrick to be his partner, unaware that Matt voted for him. However, Matt was unable to beat Safiya Nygaard and JC was stabbed to death by the Killer Clown Leader as a result.

His soul was later collected by The Collector and brought to her Museum of the Dead. The Collector placed his soul in the Jar of Souls to be feasted on later. JC was eventually freed by Joey after his infiltration of the museum with Bretman Rock.

Role[]

Season 3[]

Episode 1 - The Clowns Here Kill Part 1[]

JC and the other Season 3 guests arrive at the location where they are to enter Everlock. Upon entering, they were greeted by the head clown, who most of the guests have distrustful thoughts towards. Joey recieves a Jack in the Box artifact, and when they wind it up, killer clowns are released in the town. He solves puzzles in the arcade with most of the group after fleeing the clowns, but is later captured and tied to the Merry-Go-Round with the other guests.

Episode 2 - The Clowns Here Kill Part 2[]

JC helps the group a lot, but since they are split into groups, Matt does not witness JC's feats and votes him in. JC and Teala got voted in and had to choose a partner. Teala picks Safiya, while JC picks Matt, which is awkward since he's the one who voted him in. Matt isn't fast enough to win the challenge, and is beaten by Safiya. This leads to JC being stabbed repeatedly by the head clown and dying.

Season 4[]

Episode 6 - The Maze of Terror[]

JC is mentioned by Matt in a confessional, saying that he let him down.

Episode 9 - Prehistoric Evil[]

JC’s soul is spotted being kept inside the Jar of Souls, along with the souls of Joey’s other friends, by Joey, Colleen, and Bretman when they first enter the room where the jar is located.

Episode 10 - The Collector Returns[]

After Joey, Colleen, and Bretman grab The Cosmic Sphere and are about to escape Purgatory, they quickly stop by where the Jar of Souls is located and Joey goes to release the souls of his other friends kept inside, JC’s soul included, where they float away.

Overall Role Significance[]

While JC, like most contestants who are eliminated early in the show, did not have a chance to impact the show himself, his death serves as a point of distinction that sets it apart from the series as a whole. In this case, JC, unlike most first eliminated guests who are chosen for elimination for their lack of contribution, puzzle solving skills, or connections within the group; represents a guest who, while useful and in good standings within the group, was eliminated due to the draw of the cards. This helps set Season 3 apart from other seasons in the series as his early death not only came as a shock to both the audience and the other players, but also served to show the fact that even if you are the most helpful person in the group, you can still be eliminated based on the luck of the draw. JC's death also serves as motivation for Matthew Patrick's character in Season 4. As after indirectly causing his death with both voting and failing to save him in the third season, Matt expresses guilt for the death and tries to make up for it by trying to save Colleen Ballinger in The Minotaur’s Maze Challenge, which he unfortunately fails.

Trivia[]

  • JC's original role was The Filmmaker, but was changed last minute.
  • He was also on the YouTube Original series “Fight of the Living Dead: Experiment 88.” The series revolved around surviving a controlled zombie apocalypse scenario while solving puzzles and tasks to escape, ran by a suspicious organization known as C.O.N.O.P. Unlike Escape the Night, death isn’t guaranteed and everyone can technically survive if they get lucky. The show ran for three seasons.
  • Ironically JC managed to survive “Fight of the Living Dead: Experiment 88.” but was the first to die on Escape The Night. Also ironically, JC was revived in that show, so if he was revived instead of Matthew Patrick, he would’ve been revived on both of YouTube Original’s reality competition shows.
  • JC, Justine Ezarik, Jesse Wellens, and Joey Graceffa have all been part of Fight of the Living Dead with Jesse, Justine, and Joey all being part of season 1 in 2015, while JC was part of the second season in 2016. Jesse and JC survived, while Justine and Joey both died during their time on the show.
  • Mentioned in the Twitch Season 3 livestream, Anthony Padilla was originally going to be The Filmmaker until, for unknown reasons, JC took his place and was changed to The Hippie by Joey.
