This season's guests' assistants are The Sorceress and Mortimer while this season's main villain is The Collector.

Guests

Special Guests

Liza Koshy

This Season 2 original was featured in Escape the Night Season 4. When Joey Graceffa removed the crystal from The Carnival Master's chest, it freed Liza from her exhibit at the Museum of the Dead. She snuck into a room at the museum where she found a telecommunication network linking to the crystal. After asking Joey to come to save his friends, she is caught by The Collector, who stabs her & takes her soul.

Nikita Dragun

This Season 3 survivor was featured in Escape the Night Season 4. After hearing Liza's pleas for help, the Society Against Evil enlists her, Joey, and Matthew Patrick. Joined by Ryu and Jael. Nikita is assigned to retrieving the Carnival Master's Crystal. They open a portal to Purgatory to save the fallen guests from the Museum of the Dead. Only Joey and Bretman Rock make it through before the portal closes as the Crown of Oblivion shattered into pieces due to the amount of power needed to open the portal. Matt and Nikita later join them in Episode 6, The Maze of Terror. During the final challenge, Nikita knocks down Colleen's structure. She makes it out and doesn't feel much remorse. In Episode 7, she is sent back to Jael, Ryu, and Matt after Scheherazade is killed. She tells them she thinks the All-Stars and Bretman have a chance. She returns once more in Episode 10 after seeing Colleen and Bretman escape purgatory without Joey.

Matthew Patrick

This Season 3 survivor was featured in Escape the Night Season 4. After hearing Liza's pleas for help, the Society Against Evil enlists him, Joey, and Nikita Dragun. Joined by Ryu and Jael. Matt is assigned to find the Crown of Oblivion. They then open a portal to Purgatory to save the fallen guests from the Museum of the Dead. Only Joey and Bretman Rock make it through before the portal closes as the Crown of Oblivion shattered into pieces due to the amount of power needed to open the portal. Matt and Nikita later join them in Episode 6, The Maze of Terror. Rosanna and Matt hug as they see each other again. During the final challenge, Matt is sent back to Jael and Ryu as Colleen is killed. He returns in Episode 7 and is seen with the The Unquenchable Fire . He returns once more in Episode 10 after seeing Colleen and Bretman escape purgatory without Joey.

Pre-Production

(While the exact days of some of these events are unknown, this section aims to compile what is known about the pre-production leading up to Escape the Night Season 4.)

On November 11, 2023, Joey revealed that Season 4's location was originally two houses that were connected by a large pond, and that each house would have had its own villain that would split the season into two parts, with the first half of the season taking place in one house before the remaining guests would take a boat over to the other house for the other half of the season. He also stated that production was far enough along on this location that it had its own creative/storyline. Yet, as stated in a previous interview in December 2018, Joey lost the location due to, as he states in this new video, "family drama". This caused the ETN team to have to scrap all the ideas surrounding the original location and having to not only find a new location fast, as they began filming in March of 2019, but they also had to make up an entire new storyline for the season.

One of the ideas Joey had for Season 4 was originally shooting at each previous location, possibly for the first episode though this is not stated, as mentioned during a recent Twitch stream rewatch of Season 1. However, it seems since Season 1, the price of renting the estate has gone up thus causing the idea to be cut.[1]

While its unknown when casting began, Joey has revealed that casting for this season had multiple issues throughout different videos and interviews. Both Shane Dawson and Liza Koshy were asked to be part of Season 4, but conflicts with their schedules prevented them from being part of the season. However, given Liza's impotence to the plot of Season 4, Joey and her were able to record a brief cameo after regular filming had wrapped that explained why she was missing in the season. Lele Pons was offered a role on Season 4, yet never responded to any of Joey's messages, and thus was skipped over. Manny MUA was a strong contender for being part of Season 4, yet a temporary falling out between him and Joey caused Joey to skip him over for being in a season. A decision that Joey states he regrets after he and Manny became friends again after Season 4.

Trivia

  • Fans speculated that this season would be an All-Stars edition based on the deceased guests in the crystal at the end of Season 3. Joey confirmed this on Instagram.[3]
  • Originally there were supposed to be two new guests this season both having the plotline of being brought by one of the returning season 3 victors. Nikita was supposed to bring Bretman Rock while Matt was supposed to bring Anthony Padilla.
    • However, Anthony Padilla left on a trip to Japan before filming began, so instead it was only Bretman Rock who joined the all-star cast.
  • Some fans have made the connection that the order the guests were introduced in the glass breaking scene in the first episode is the order they die in this season (Justine being first, Timothy being second, and DeStorm being third), however, Colleen's death breaks this chain. It is actually set in the order of when they died initially.
  • This is the first season to feature guests that died in the previous seasons.
  • Alex, Tana, DeStorm, and Gabbie are from Season 2, Rosanna and Colleen are from Season 3, Justine and Timothy are from Season 1, and Joey is from all three previous seasons, which makes the guests from Season 2 heavy.
  • Season 4 is the only season to occur in purgatory rather than a place that is trapped in time in the real world.
  • Every promo trailer for the guests featured sounds from when they died, however, since Bretman has not died, no audio plays.
  • Justine appears to be angry in the billboard picture, and the Escape the Night Instagram team responded with, "She is."
  • Joey tried to get Lele to return several times, but she never responded to him, so her spot as a competitor/special guest was passed over. Joey also said that he wanted Liza and Shane to return, but both had problems with their schedules that prevented them, though Liza was able to guest star in Episode 1.[4]
  • Joey has revealed that Safiya was not asked to return for Season 4 as he didn’t think she would participate in the season.
  • Joey has revealed in his Twitch Season 1 watch-party that he wished he brought GloZell back for Season 4.
  • Joey Graceffa announced on Twitch that Manny MUA was a strong all-star candidate for Season 4, but a temporary falling-out in their friendship prevented it from happening. Joey later explained that they were friends again, and expressed his regret for not having Manny on this season.
  • Season 4's first episode aired on July 11, 2019, airing later in the year than the other seasons.
  • This is the second season to have a woman killed first.
  • According to Joey in his BTS video, he states that the guest's personas are based off of the 1940s.
  • Joey revealed in a video that on the first day of shooting Season 4, they lost power on set and had to wait an extra hour before they could film the first episode.
  • Season 4 is the first season to have a previous assistant (Mortimer) return to aid the guests.
    • This is the first time we see an antagonist (the Sorceress) go from enemy to ally.
  • Episode 7 was the first time any guest had volunteered to take the place of someone who had been voted into a challenge.
  • Episode 8 will be the second episode of the series to contain the revival of a deceased guest. The first example of this is in the 7th episode of Season 3, where Matthew Patrick was revived.
    • Additionally, Joey Graceffa was behind both of the revivals, joined by Safiya Nygaard in Season 3.
  • As of Episode 8, Alex Wassabi now holds the record for the most amount of times voted into the Death Challenge, with 7.
    • He also holds the record for most Death Challenges won/survived, with 5
  • The tarot cards show how the guest died, Although fans noticed slight changes in some Ex. Rossana had 3 knives vertically as her death, but the card showed 3 horizontally
  • Season 4 is the only season where the guests don’t vote for themselves in the final voting session.
  • Season 4 is the only season to not include a challenge where the voted-in guests had to choose a partner to either help or fight for them.
  • Rosanna Pansino now holds the record for most episodes in a row being alive without being in a challenge, 8, beating Eva Gutowski's record of 7.
  • Season 4 is the first season to not have any form of a special episode, within and/or after the season.
    • There was a behind the scenes video on Joey's YouTube channel, but is not counted as it is not part of the Premium episodes, like in previous seasons.
  • Season 4 is the second season to have equality of genders in the final 4.
  • This is the only season without a betrayal challenge, though there were times where a guest felt betrayed, i.e. when Joey stood up for Ro, but she voted for him.
  • Season 4 was nominated for 5 Streamy Awards - Costume Design (Olivia Hines), Editing (Steve Grubel), Best Ensemble, Show of the Year, and Unscripted Series.[5] Escape the Night took home a Streamy for Editing and Unscripted Series.
  • Joey revealed in an interview that they lost their original filming location in December 2018, forcing them to have to look for a new one fast.[4]
  • Joey also revealed in the same interview that they had to stop production 3 days into the filming because of 75mph winds. This was clearly visible at Episode 6.
  • Season 4 is the only season that has had both a revival and a challenge with no deaths.
  • Season 4 holds the most scripted deaths out of any season, with the deaths being of Justine Ezarik (possibly), Tana Mongeau and Gabbie Hanna. Seasons 1 and 2 both only had 2, while Season 3 had none.
